Cotton characterized the region once. King Cotton. Provided for riches. Thus, they were able to build nice houses. The others paid a high price. Slavery. Sharecropping. State of dependence. Poverty. Now cotton is no more. I am travelling to Louisiana to visit a cotton plantation. Directly on the other bank of the Mississippi. Later, Becky tells me that they still grow cotton in the north of Alabama. They barely need workers there. |
